Effective goal setting is a very powerful tool which smooths the progress of attaining your dreams and being successful in life. Goal setting, without a doubt, is the first step in every undertaking. However, this is not as simple as sitting down and writing down your goals on a piece of paper. It is much more than that. Realistic goal setting is not necessarily a quick procedure and involves some personal time and effort.

Firstly, you will need to develop an achievable goal statement. This statement provides the framework of the plan you intend to apply to achieve these goals. It should be in logical, attainable steps, all steadily advancing you to your ultimate goal. While detail is important, make sure that the achievable goal statement is both straightforward and precise. The SMART acronym for defining achievable goals is a concise guideline which effectively outlines the necessary steps. For a goal to be readily achievable, it should meet all of the criteria below.

Specific - know precisely what you are determined to accomplish.

Measurable - it must be achievable so that success can be determined and quantified.

Action-Oriented - it must follow a set of things to do or action towards achieving specific goals.

Realistic - set realistic and achievable mini-goals towards the realisation of the ultimate goal

Break down your goals into smaller, more easily achievable targets. When you have completed your goal statement, you need to turn it into a plan of action. List the steps in their appropriate and sequential order to make them more easily achievable. Each little goal attained will serve as a reward and the resultant satisfaction bolsters commitment for the attainment of future goals.

Motivation and commitment are the forces that will sustain our desire to bring to fulfillment each and every step of the action plan. Motivation pushes us to action whereas commitment keeps us striving in spite of any setbacks we may encounter.

The steps need to be recordable and actually recorded in a format which is easy to review. A regular review system of your action plan is critical so that you do not lose track of that which you set out to accomplish and, also, that which you have already accomplished. Keeping yourself organised and focused is of paramount concern. Losing focus can easily lead to disillusionment and inevitable failure. A quick million will not happen without planning and determination.

Attainable goal setting is a dynamic process. It is accomplished over a given time frame, not immediately. As we begin to achieve the mini-goals, we may discover that there are actions we have included which are not necessary and steps we have omitted. A regular review and appraisal of our action plan is therefore imperative so that we can make any desirable modifications to the plan. Changes, both in time frame and method are fine, but ensure any such amendments are made for the right reasons.

Remember, retain your focus and recover it as quickly as possible should your determination falter.
